About CEFZ

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

Nelson Mandela

We are an organisation of change.

Creative Education Foundation Zanzibar (CEFZ) is a charitable NGO which was established in 2011 in Zanzibar, Tanzania in response to the lack of access to quality education for Zanzibar's orphaned and underprivileged children.

CEFZ Zanzibar Steiner School provide free access to quality education for girls, orphans and children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Our philosophy is to raise young people who are socially and environmentally responsible and future agents of change. We do this by blending the local school curriculum with the educational principles of Rudolf Steiner. Our curriculum focuses on creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, academia at the appropriate development stage of the child, and social responsibility. We aim to provide the skills needed for youth to become employable and to transform the lives of others.

We believe that if we can provide a quality education to just one child from a family in need, that child can help support their extended family and community in the future.

As a grassroots organisation, CEFZ have low overheads and leverage  volunteers (even our full-time Executive Director is volunteer). The result is minimal costs going to administration of the project, and your donation and sponsorships going to where they are needed most - keeping kids healthy and in school receiving the exceptional education they need to transcend barriers.

A Unique Approach

The Zanzibar Steiner School Education Program is designed to serve as a foundation for lifelong learning, providing students with a pathway out of poverty and preparing them for the world beyond Zanzibar Steiner School.

We take the Zanzibar government curriculum, fuse it with the Steiner Waldorf curriculum, and inject engagement, fun and joy into the child's learning experience. Steiner education is a proven producer of creative thinkers, community leaders and agents of change; just what Zanzibar needs.
Exceptional teachers are needed to guide the learning of children living in exceptinally difficult circumstances. Our teachers are mentored daily in the workplace to ensure each and every child is receiveing the same standard of education any and every child is entitled to. As we add a grade class each year, we recruit and train more local teachers, reaching further into our community and imcreasing our impact on the lives of children living in poverty.
When the school reaches full capacity of K-12, we aim to be in a position to take fee paying students, who will offset some of the costs of our sponsored students.
