Volunteer Pascal shares his impressions of CEFZ
I am Pascal Bouquet, a Master of Education student from Germany, who just completed a semester abroad at the fascinating Creative Education Foundation Zanzibar (CEFZ).
CEFZ is a Rudolf Steiner Primary and a standard Secondary School located on a hill in the spice farming area of Zanzibar. My first impression of the school was, "This school is art." Everywhere you look, there is something beautiful to see. The vibrant murals on the walls, the lush greenery surrounding the campus, and the energy of the students all contribute to an atmosphere that feels like a creative sanctuary.
The colourful location in nature next to the spice farms enhances this atmosphere even more. The school's location provides a calm and focused space for education amidst the lively backdrop of the island. As I walk through the campus with its beautiful artwork, diverse animals, and plants, I am reminded that all of these aspects echo the school's philosophy of nurturing creativity through a deep connection with the natural world.
I felt welcome the moment I entered the campus. All of the students greeted me with smiles, and the teachers introduced me to all the classes, as well as showing me around the campus. I even get delicious fruit and vegetables from the school's garden regulary with the children :)
The teachers are not only warm and welcoming but also competent and passionate educators. They are dedicated to providing the students a holistic education by enabling them to express themselves through various forms of art and creativity. It's a pleasure to learn from them by discussing different perspectives on education, and I am grateful for this unique experience.
in November, the students are built a traditional Tanzanian house on the campus, which was a fantastic hands-on learning experience that reflects the school's commitment to embracing local culture and practical skills. Like building a traditional house, spontaneous orientation walks through the spice farms are nothing out of the ordinary at CEFZ, demonstrating that this school extends far beyond textbooks and classroom learning into a learning environment of meaningful experiences.
In December 2023 I completed my semester at CEFZ. During my time there I experienced many more discoveries and insights than I can possibly write about here. The teachers and students remain in my thoughts and I miss them already.
Asante sana!
